Ten days is enough for a memorable first Thailand trip if you avoid overloading the route. The mistake many travellers make is trying to see Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and Pattaya in one visit. You spend more time in vans and airports than actually enjoying Thailand.
This itinerary keeps the classic balance: Bangkok for culture and food, Chiang Mai for temples and mountains, and Krabi or Phuket for beaches.
Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok
Land, clear immigration with your TDAC, check into your hotel and keep the first day light. Walk along the river, eat street food in Charoenkrung or Chinatown, and sleep early.
Day 2: Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun
Start early at the Grand Palace, walk to Wat Pho, then cross the river to Wat Arun. In the evening, take a sunset dinner cruise or visit a rooftop bar.
Day 3: Markets and modern Bangkok
If it is a weekend, visit Chatuchak Market. Otherwise explore Jim Thompson House, Siam malls, Lumphini Park and Chinatown at night.
Day 4: Fly to Chiang Mai
Morning flight to Chiang Mai. Spend the afternoon in the Old City visiting Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. Eat khao soi for dinner.
Day 5: Doi Suthep and cooking class
Visit Doi Suthep early for mountain views. In the afternoon or evening, join a Thai cooking class with market visit.
Day 6: Ethical elephant sanctuary or Doi Inthanon
Choose one full-day experience. Pick an elephant sanctuary with no riding and no performances, or visit Doi Inthanon National Park for waterfalls and mountain scenery.
Day 7: Fly south to Krabi or Phuket
Fly from Chiang Mai to Krabi or Phuket. Krabi is better for dramatic cliffs and island hopping; Phuket is better for resort choice, nightlife and direct international flights.
Day 8: Island day trip
From Krabi, take the Four Islands tour or Railay day. From Phuket, choose Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay or Racha Islands. Book small-group tours where possible.
Day 9: Slow beach day
Do less. Swim, eat seafood, get a massage and watch sunset. The best Thailand memories often come from unscheduled time.
Day 10: Depart or return to Bangkok
If your international flight leaves from Bangkok, fly back with a generous buffer. Separate-ticket domestic flights can be risky if delayed.
Budget guide
- Backpacker: ₹45,000-₹70,000 excluding international flights.
- Mid-range: ₹85,000-₹1.4 lakh excluding international flights.
- Comfort/luxury: ₹1.8 lakh+ depending on hotels and tours.
TDAC timing for this itinerary
File the TDAC within 72 hours before your first arrival in Thailand. You do not need a new TDAC for domestic flights inside Thailand, but you need one again if you leave Thailand and re-enter.
