Thailand Destinations

Where will your Thailand adventure begin? From temple-studded Bangkok to the limestone islands of Krabi, here are the destinations every traveller should know.

City · Culture · Food

Bangkok

Thailand's electric capital is a city of beautiful contradictions — gilded temples next to soaring skyscrapers, $1 street-food bowls down the road from Michelin-starred restaurants, ancient klong canals winding through districts of glass-and-chrome malls.

First-timers usually plan 3–4 days here. We'd recommend 5–6 to do it without exhausting yourself, including a day trip to Ayutthaya or the floating markets.

  • The Grand Palace and Wat Pho
  • Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) at sunset
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market
  • Long-tail boat ride through the Thonburi klongs
  • Street-food crawl in Chinatown or Charoenkrung
  • Rooftop bar at golden hour

Phuket

Thailand's largest island is bigger, calmer in places and more varied than most first-timers expect. Yes, Patong's neon-lit Bangla Road is here, but so are private bays with five-star resorts, a UNESCO-protected Sino-Portuguese old town, world-class diving and ferry access to the Phi Phi and Similan islands.

The wrong beach for your vibe can sour the whole trip — choose Patong for energy, Kata or Karon for families, Surin or Bang Tao for upscale, and Mai Khao for total escape.

  • Day trip to Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay
  • Phang Nga Bay sea-cave kayaking
  • Sunset at Promthep Cape
  • Phuket Old Town Sunday Walking Street
  • Big Buddha viewpoint
  • Similan Islands diving (Nov–April)

Chiang Mai

If Bangkok is Thailand's energy, Chiang Mai is its soul. The 700-year-old former capital of the Lanna Kingdom sits in a green valley surrounded by jungle-covered mountains. It's slower, leafier, cooler and far more livable than the megacity to the south.

Visit between November and February for cool weather and clear mountain views. Avoid March–April when burning season turns the air hazardous.

  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (mountain temple)
  • Ethical elephant sanctuary visit
  • Old City temple hopping
  • Sunday Walking Street market
  • Doi Inthanon day trip — Thailand's highest peak
  • Thai cooking class with market tour

Krabi & Railay

If Phuket is the social, urbane island, Krabi is the wilder, more dramatic mainland alternative. Towering limestone karsts plunge straight into emerald water, hidden beaches sit behind sea-cliffs reachable only by boat, and the rock-climbing on Railay's overhanging walls is world famous.

Ao Nang is the main beach town; Railay is the peninsula you can only reach by long-tail boat; Koh Lanta offers a quieter, more laid-back alternative across the bay.

  • Railay Beach (West, Phra Nang, Tonsai)
  • Four Islands tour from Ao Nang
  • Sea kayaking through Bor Thor mangroves
  • Rock climbing at Tonsai or Railay
  • Sunset cocktails at Phra Nang Cave Beach
  • Ferry hop to Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi

Pattaya

Once known purely for its nightlife, Pattaya has matured into a surprisingly versatile beach town. The waterfront promenade has been rebuilt, the family-friendly Jomtien Beach has cleaned up, and a new generation of beach clubs, theme parks and waterparks have made it Thailand's go-to weekend destination from Bangkok.

Just 2 hours by road from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport, Pattaya is an easy add-on if you don't have time for a longer beach trip.

  • Jomtien Beach for families
  • Sanctuary of Truth (all-wood temple sculpture)
  • Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
  • Koh Larn island day trip
  • Cartoon Network Amazone & Ramayana waterparks
  • Walking Street nightlife (adults only after dark)
