Thailand has more than 3,200 km of coastline split between two seas, hundreds of islands, and beaches for every kind of traveller. Want crowd-free white sand and limestone cliffs? Got it. Want a five-star resort with a swim-up bar? Got that too. Want a remote island with no Wi-Fi and a single shack selling fresh-caught fish? Still here in 2026.
This isn't a list of every beach in Thailand — it's our hand-picked 15, the ones we'd actually go back to, with a mix of famous icons and quieter gems. We've broken them down by region so you can plan around them.
Andaman Sea: the postcard west coast
1. Railay Beach, Krabi
Railay is technically a peninsula, not an island, but the only way in is by boat — making it feel like one. Sheer limestone cliffs ring four beaches (West, East, Phra Nang and Tonsai), framing some of the most photogenic coastline on earth. Phra Nang in particular, with its sea-eroded caves and shrine to the sea goddess, is a contender for Thailand's most beautiful beach. Stay 2–3 nights to slow down and rock climb, kayak or just float.
2. Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi Leh
Yes, the "Beach" beach. After Maya Bay was closed for years to let the reef recover, it reopened in 2022 with strict visitor limits, restricted swimming and a backside-entry boardwalk. The result: those iconic 100-metre cliffs and electric-blue water look better than they have in 20 years. Book a small-group tour that arrives at opening time for the best chance of photos without crowds.
3. Freedom Beach, Phuket
Just south of Patong but worlds away in atmosphere. Reachable only by boat or a 20-minute jungle hike, Freedom Beach is a crescent of perfect white sand backed by green hills, with very few visitors. Bring water and snacks — facilities are minimal.
4. Kata Noi, Phuket
If you want a Phuket beach you can walk to from your hotel but still feel relaxed, head to Kata Noi instead of busier Patong or Kata. It's a 700-metre sweep of clean sand with calm waters in the dry season and great surf from May to October.
5. Long Beach, Koh Phi Phi Don
Most Phi Phi visitors stay in the chaos of Tonsai. Smart ones grab a longtail to Long Beach on the south end of the island, where the sand is whiter, the snorkelling reef is right offshore, and beach bungalows trade buzz for serenity.
6. Koh Lipe
Right down by the Malaysian border, Koh Lipe is the dreamy tropical island Thailand is famous for — picture-perfect blue-green water and powdery sand, with great snorkelling and just enough infrastructure to be comfortable. Walking Street has the bars and restaurants; Sunrise Beach is the showstopper.
7. Koh Kradan
Voted "World's Best Beach" in 2023 by World Beach Guide, Koh Kradan in the Trang archipelago has barely any development — just three small resorts, a 5 km strip of impossibly soft sand and water so clear you can see your toes from waist deep. If you want to disconnect, this is the one.
Gulf of Thailand: the calmer east coast
8. Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui
Samui's most famous beach is a 6 km arc of pale gold sand fronted by every kind of resort and restaurant you could want. Stay at the south end for a calmer vibe. Best between January and April when the water is glass-flat.
9. Silver Beach, Koh Samui
Between Chaweng and Lamai, this small bay is one of Samui's best-kept secrets. The water is exceptionally clear, the snorkelling around the rocks is surprisingly good, and there's just one restaurant.
10. Haad Rin, Koh Phangan
Famous for the monthly Full Moon Party, Haad Rin is also a genuinely beautiful beach the other 29 days of the month. Stay during the new moon if you want the sand to yourself.
11. Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat), Koh Phangan
On Phangan's wild north coast, Bottle Beach is reached by longtail boat or a sweaty 90-minute jungle hike. Reward: a curving bay with three or four laid-back resorts and zero day-trippers.
12. Thong Nai Pan, Koh Phangan
Two beaches in one — Yai (big) for the resorts, Noi (small) for the boutique hotels and barefoot luxury. Tropical jungle drops right to the sand.
13. Koh Tao
Smaller and more rugged than its Samui-and-Phangan neighbours, Koh Tao is Thailand's beach-bumming, dive-shop-overflowing little brother. Sairee Beach is the main strip; tiny Aow Leuk and Tanote Bay are quieter swimming and snorkelling alternatives.
Quieter coastlines worth the detour
14. Khao Lak coastline
An hour north of Phuket airport, Khao Lak is a 30 km stretch of low-key beaches lined with mid-range resorts. The pace is slow, the prices are reasonable, and it's the perfect launchpad for liveaboard dives to the Similan Islands.
15. Hua Hin and Pranburi
The royal Thai family's favourite seaside town is a three-hour drive south of Bangkok. The beach itself is long but not the prettiest in the country — what sets Hua Hin apart is the food, the weekend night markets and the easy access from the capital. Continue 30 minutes south to Pranburi for a far quieter, less developed alternative.
When to visit which coast
Thailand's two coasts have opposite rainy seasons — which is a fantastic feature, not a bug.
- Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta): Best Nov–April. Rainy May–October.
- Gulf (Samui, Phangan, Koh Tao): Best Jan–April and Jul–Sep. Wettest Oct–Dec.
If you travel in October, head to Samui and Phangan. In May, go to Hua Hin or Khao Lak. There's almost always somewhere dry in Thailand.
Getting between beaches
The Andaman beaches are connected by fast ferries (1–2 hours between most islands) and there's a decent network of mainland buses and the new train extension. The Gulf islands are reached from Surat Thani (overnight train + ferry combo) or fly directly into Koh Samui's airport.
Inter-island travel can be slower than it looks on a map. Build in buffer days — a missed ferry can mean an overnight stop you weren't expecting.
