Bangkok has two major airports, and choosing the wrong one for a connection can cost you hours. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles most long-haul international flights, while Don Mueang (DMK) is the main hub for low-cost airlines around Thailand and Asia. Both are efficient, but the arrival experience is smoother when you understand the layout, immigration process and transport options.
BKK vs DMK: which airport are you using?
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)
BKK is Bangkok's main international airport, located east of the city. It handles Thai Airways, Emirates, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, Air India, British Airways and most long-haul carriers. The Airport Rail Link connects BKK to central Bangkok in about 30 minutes.
Don Mueang Airport (DMK)
DMK sits north of Bangkok and is mainly used by AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and other budget airlines. It is common for travellers to land at BKK and fly onward from DMK, but the transfer can take 1.5-3 hours depending on traffic.
Before landing: TDAC check
Every foreign traveller must submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival. Immigration officers can check your TDAC record electronically, but you should still save the QR confirmation offline and keep a printed backup if possible.
Arrival steps at BKK
- Follow signs for Immigration / Passport Control.
- Join the foreign passport queue.
- Show passport, boarding pass if requested, and TDAC QR code if asked.
- Collect luggage from the carousel.
- Pass customs, then continue to SIM cards, ATMs, taxi desk or Airport Rail Link.
Transport from BKK
- Airport Rail Link: fastest during traffic. Connects to Phaya Thai and Makkasan.
- Official taxi queue: reliable and metered. Add airport surcharge and tolls.
- Grab: convenient, but pickup points can be confusing for first-timers.
- Hotel transfer: easiest after a long flight, especially for families.
Transport from DMK
DMK has no direct train as convenient as BKK's rail link, but the Red Line train connects to Bang Sue/Krung Thep Aphiwat station. Taxis and Grab are the most common options, and buses are available for budget travellers.
Airport SIM cards and eSIMs
You can buy tourist SIM cards at both airports from AIS, True and dtac. Expect to pay more than city prices, but the convenience is worth it for many travellers. If you want to avoid queues, buy an eSIM before flying and activate it on landing.
Connection advice
If you need to transfer between BKK and DMK, allow at least 4 hours between flights, preferably 5-6. Bangkok traffic is unpredictable, and immigration queues can vary widely. Avoid separate-ticket connections unless you have a full day buffer.
Common mistakes
- Booking a domestic flight from DMK too soon after landing at BKK.
- Not filing the TDAC before flying.
- Accepting unofficial taxi offers in the arrivals hall.
- Arriving without a hotel address for immigration.
- Forgetting that tolls and airport surcharge are paid separately from taxi meter fare.
A little preparation turns Bangkok airport arrival into a simple process. File the TDAC early, keep documents offline, use official transport channels and give yourself enough transfer time.
