Songkran is Thailand's New Year festival and the world's biggest water fight. It is joyful, chaotic, spiritual and completely unforgettable. But it also affects hotels, transport, road safety and immigration queues, so planning matters.
When is Songkran 2026?
Songkran is officially celebrated from 13-15 April every year, but many cities extend the party for several days. Chiang Mai and Pattaya often run longer than Bangkok. Expect higher hotel prices and crowded transport before and after the holiday.
Best places to celebrate
Chiang Mai
Probably the most famous Songkran destination. The moat around the Old City becomes a giant water battle, and traditional ceremonies happen at temples throughout the city.
Bangkok
Silom Road and Khao San Road are the main party zones. Bangkok is intense, easy to reach and great for first-timers who want big-city energy.
Pattaya
Pattaya's Wan Lai celebrations often extend after the official Songkran dates, making it a good choice if you arrive late.
Phuket
Patong's Bangla Road becomes a full-scale water party. Beach resorts also run family-friendly celebrations.
What to pack for Songkran
- Waterproof phone pouch.
- Quick-dry clothes.
- Small dry bag for passport and cash.
- Goggles if you dislike water in your eyes.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and hat.
Safety tips
- Do not ride a scooter during water fights unless absolutely necessary.
- Protect your passport and phone in waterproof bags.
- Use official taxis, Grab or walk short distances.
- Be respectful near temples and elderly people.
- Do not throw water at monks, babies, food vendors or drivers.
Hotel and transport advice
Book hotels at least 2-3 months ahead for Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Domestic flights, overnight trains and buses sell out quickly. If your international flight arrives during Songkran week, file the TDAC as soon as the 72-hour window opens.
Cultural meaning
Songkran is more than a water fight. Thai families visit temples, pour water over Buddha images, clean homes and honour elders. If you visit a temple, dress respectfully and observe the quieter side of the festival too.
TDAC reminder for festival travellers
Immigration queues can be busier around major holidays. Having the TDAC completed and ready makes arrival smoother, especially if you are tired after a long flight.
